A Guide to Wedding Hair

Every bride plans her wedding in her own unique way. Some couples prepare everything before their wedding, while others plan as they go. But no matter what type of bride you are, one thing is sure: wedding hairstyles are continuously changing!
If you haven’t decided on a final hairstyle, you may ask yourself, “Should I wear my hair up or down for the wedding?” Curly or straight hair? Simple or opulent? After all, bridal hairstyles, like wedding gowns, appear to be limitless.
But don’t be concerned! We’ll show you how to pick the finest wedding hairdo for your big day with advice from hair specialists Halli Bivona, Leigh Hardges, and Caitlyn Meyer.
Choosing your wedding hairdo is almost as crucial as picking out your wedding gown. Selecting a style that complements your personality and wedding aesthetic is critical. Here’s where the experts recommend starting.

Create an inspiration board.

“The best advice I can give brides looking for the perfect bridal hairstyle is to start a wedding hairstyle board on Pinterest.” “You’ll quickly realize that the hairstyles you pin are very similar, if not the same style repeated,” Bivona says.

Come prepared for your hair trial.

Attend your trial with a stylist. “Bring images of your gown, earrings, and headpiece.” “Show pictures of your wedding style inspiration,” Hardges says. “Just because it’s your wedding day doesn’t imply your partner wants a new you. They want you, so go within your natural style instincts. “Do what feels right,” she advises.

Look at your wedding dress.

Take cues from your dress and how the designer styled it, whether on a model or in editorial photographs. “It can help you break out of a bridal hair overload and gain a new perspective on how to best style your hair,” Bivona explains.

She also mentions that if you’re a bride wearing your hair down and intending to wear a dress with a complicated back, it’s a good idea to pull out hairstyles that allow you to show off the back. High necklines benefit significantly from even higher updos that stretch the neck, while strapless dresses benefit from a waterfall of hair falling about the shoulders. A center part can be a well-balanced way to mimic a sweetheart neckline, while a deep side part can highlight asymmetric elements.

Factor in your veil or headpiece.

Significant accessories, like the bridal gown, can influence your wedding hairstyle selection. If you’ve fallen in love with a specific veil, consider complimentary coifs. Draped veils, for example, have no fasteners and must cascade over the head perfectly. On the other hand, a clip-in veil may necessitate a ‘do that can grip and keep its weight, such as an updo or braided style. Headpieces will demand the same amount of thought, whether full-fledged crowns, tiny tiaras, or fresh floral toppers.

Consider your everyday hairstyles.

“I’m always curious about how my brides wear their hair regularly.” “This is a great place to start when deciding on your wedding hairstyle,” Bivona adds. “If you normally wear your hair down, look for bridal blowouts.” Consider an updo or a formal ponytail if you want to wear it up. This way, when you look back at your wedding images, you’ll recognize yourself, albeit in a more formal guise.”

“Look at some of your favorite pictures of yourself,” Hedges suggests. Look for the common denominator in all of those photographs of your hair and start there.”

Remember that extensions are an option.

Your natural hair texture, length, or density does not have to be an impediment. There are choices if you’ve always wanted a particular look but have not had the hair to achieve it. Hair extensions can help you get more of what you already have, like straight hair can be coaxed to hold a perfect wave. Innovative products and techniques can radically transform your hair texture, provide you with far more hair and thickness than you ever imagined possible, or transform those short layers into Rapunzel-length locks. Put some ideal hairstyles in your inspiration deck, and watch what magic your hairstylist can conjure up to make that vision a reality.

Listen to your gut.

“To be honest, my advice is to go with whatever feels most like ‘you.'” People look their best when they feel their best, and as long as we acknowledge the possible concerns with certain features and manage expectations, a client is always happiest going with their gut,” Meyer explains.

Wedding Hairstyle Types

Take notice of the many wedding hairstyles now that you’ve limited your hairdo options. The most traditional hairstyle is a romantic updo or wearing the hair down.

“I have been doing bridal hair for over 10 years now, and I have found that the classic wavy blowout has stood the test of time as the top bridal hairstyle,” Bivona explains. “However, in recent years, I’ve noticed more softly waved ponytails or sleek editorial updos.” Some tremendous disheveled and romantic updos are making a significant reappearance.”

“We’ll continue to see more modernized takes on classic styles, such as low, romantic updos and Hollywood Glam waves,” Meyer adds. Many brides choose the classic style with a side part and tons of volume, but we’re also getting a lot of requests for sleek, modern waves with a center part.

Updos

Because of the numerous options, updos are one of the most popular wedding hairstyles. An updo can be pretty formal, with each hair precisely put or left undone for a more playful look. You can also accessorize your haircut with bridal jewelry.

“Updo styles range from extremely intricate twists and coils to a simple sleek ballet bun.” When it comes to updos, you have a lot of freedom. “I’ve discovered that almost any updo style can be adjusted to fit almost any face shape,” Bivona says.

Bivona also says that an updo has numerous advantages, such as not worrying about the style dropping or becoming frizzy, and that “especially for summer weddings, getting your hair off your neck will keep you cool during your gorgeous outdoor ceremony.”

Down Hairstyles

According to Bivona, down hairstyles can range from a classic bouncy blowout and gentle waves to sleeker styles tucked behind the ears. Most brides like to keep their hair down because it makes them feel more like “them.”

These styles offer a playful element to a formal setting, such as a wedding, and can be styled in various ways. “The contrast between a couture gown and a relaxed blowout makes for some stunning photos.” “However, if you want to meet in the middle of an updo and a fully-down hairstyle, a pinned half-up, half-down look is a great way to meet in the middle of an updo and a fully-down hairstyle,” Bivona suggests.

Natural Hairstyles

According to Hardges, natural hairstyles are as versatile as any other haircut. “Natural bridal styles are as diverse as traditional styles, but with more texture in the hair.” The options are endless: chignons, upsweeps, ponytails, half-up, half-down.”

“I see a lot of styles where the natural texture is blown out but not straightened to create this gorgeous, soft pillowy texture that can be transformed into any bridal style,” she says.

Chignons or Low Buns

If you prefer to keep your hair out of your face on the big day, go with a chignon or low bun. This is also one of the finest ways to show off your dress if it has a complex back or other design aspects to highlight. A chignon or low bun will also stay in place throughout the day and night. Because of this, you won’t have to worry about your hair falling out or losing its bouncy curls.

Curls

Curls are a flexible wedding hairdo. Vintage curls add a charming touch to any outfit! These curls are more beautiful and have a tighter appearance. Curls can be pinned out of your face or swept aside for more drama.

There are also beachy waves and loose curls. These curls cascade down and past your shoulders. They create a more comfortable yet stunning look for your special day. If you have a mermaid silhouette dress, beach waves are the ideal complement.

Ponytails

Ponytails are another option for your wedding day. Choose between a fun and flirty high ponytail with loose waves or curls and an oh-so-chic low ponytail.

Half-Up, Half-Down Hairstyles

If you need help deciding on a hairdo, there’s always the half-up, half-down look. Have your hairdresser gather the upper half of your hair into a ponytail, then decide what to do with the unfettered tresses at the bottom—you can straighten or curl it.

“Half updos are always popular.” “They’re the best of both worlds; you can have the security of wearing your hair down with the more formal feel of having it pinned out of your face,” Meyer exclaims
